RENAISSANCE/MODERN

PALAZZO MEDICI RICARDI / ULUMBARA THEATRE

After Gothic Architecture, term conditions forced to change in architecture and Renaissance Architecture was seen in time. Palazzo Medici Riccardi is a structure that is example of renaıssance architecture from Florence. First thing that we can observe, there is material changes both facade and inside. In the facade, architect chose using different material those have different quality. The material getting rough from the first floor to upper. It help us to read facade and we can see how many floor inside. Also, inside of the structure gray and white stone was used.

I can give a modern example of renaissance by Y2 Architecture.Ulumbarra Theatre was structured in Australia, 2016. Same material was used in the facade, but it is not show a change in itself. Althogh this continuity facade, we can see the level differentiation from the openings orientation.

In renaissance architecture, biforate windows showed up. It is not used all facade but the enterance of the Ulumbara remind me renaissance architecture with arches under the biforate windows.

Besides, renaissance structures have an enclosed courtyard between the arches. In Ulumbara Theatre, there is an enclosed center but also close. Ulumbara’s arches giving a direction to center, but the other one’ arches defines the central area.
